I don't use dummy tags, but I do use a lot of dummy "people", not only
for surnames but also for localities. When I set them up, I select
"unrelated". I call my dummy "people" something like "Any Jones" (where
Any = the given name and Jones = the surname). For a locality I make
the surname the state and the given name the county, eg.... "Washington
County Virginia.

When I find a "tidbit" about the Jones family I go to the Any Jones
"person" and select a custom tag called ResNote. Then I enter whatever
I found in the Memo field. I attach as witnesses anyone in the Jones
family that I think this record might be applicable to. The ResNote tag
has a sentence of <[M]> so I can print out the contents of the memo
field for all my bits and pieces relating to a particular surname. I
set up the witness sentence so it doesn't print (to me its just a
research tool). If the record is in TMG as a source, I also add a
citation on the ResNote tag.

Its a little bit of extra work to do all of this, but it is working a
lot like the old Research Log we used before computers.

P.S. If you set up locality "dummy" people as well as Surname "dummy"
people and find a record on say the Jones family in say, Washington Co.,
Tennessee, you can go to the Any Jones "person", add your ResNote tag,
and then make P2 the appropriate locality "person". Again, add anyone
you want to as witnesses. Now, you can go to either your surname
"person" or your locality "person" five years from now and see tidbits
that didn't mean anything now, but might then.
