Sometimes when I'm writing narrative, I place myself in the past and write from that perspective. Thus I say, "In 1823 Jesse Bean is found selling land to Susannah ... by 1830 he has five children and in 1840 he is in Rowan County ...". I am either breaking rules, taking license, or writing in a very advanced style. I prefer to believe the latter <g>.
