I was working with a family who had a very limited imagination when it came
to first names. Everyone was named Thomas or David and they tended to move
around the parishes on the Isle of Wight. The parish records would say
Mary, daughter of Thomas or Thomas son of David but I couldn't tell who
went where. I hired a local researcher and with the information and
knowledge she had she was able to say these Thomas and Davids belong to
this Thomas whereas the ones born a year later belong to the other. Her
opinion did vary from an earlier researcher so it was important to me to be
able to indicate whose opinion placed them with which parent as I had more
confidence in the later researcher. The event itself was not in question
but the interpretation was.
