I am not an expert on MS/Word although I have used it extensively. Anyway,
I have used the Master Document feature a little and have had _some_
success with it. On the other hand, I have only had success with it if _I_
created the entire set of documents completely from scratch. Whenever I
have tried to merge multiple document created either by myself, other
persons (using my specifications) or by a program (e.g., TMG or other
program), I have had nothing but problems.
In one case, I was able to get the Master Document feature to work using
foreign files (meaning not created personally by me in MS/Word). However,
in this case, I had to essentially re-create the files personally.
When I have had success with the Master Document feature, I have had to be
_very_ meticulous in following the specifications for the master document
and continue it in each sub-document. In those case, it was really more of
a headache than it was worth although I kept thinking it was due to a
learning cure. The bottom line for me is that while the Master Document
feature can work and do what is intended, it is also a feature that needs
much more work by the designers. Possibly, the designers could simplify
the concept and create a Wizard that would eliminate much of the setup work
and walk the user through a great deal of the process.
