Subject: Re: [TMG] should I upgrade to v5.10?

Greetings:
I don't disagree, for the most part, with the points brought out by those who are in favor of upgrading immediately to ver. 5. But it is *NOT* the choice I have made.
I *have* purchased ver. 5, and have ver. 5.10 loaded on my PC. I do not regret the decision to spend the money when I did, over a year and a half ago as I recall. I have tested and I have tweaked, for a number of reasons, but I will not trust my "live data" to the new version -- yet. Not until the program is truly complete and the final release is determined to be reasonably stable will I do so. (In case you wonder, I don't think it's all that unstable now. I have not had a single crash with 5.10.) Here are my reasons:
-- Version 4.0d does everything I need in terms of genealogical record keeping and reporting.
-- My current PDA can display *all* of my TMG data, including other witness information. That requires the help of Gary Hester's Wit2Note program. That program has not been upgraded to handle ver. 5 data.
-- Version can create HTML output (although that is useful only in limited circumstances, Second Site being as capable as it is).
-- I am familiar with ver. 4.0d's quirks, and it "plays well" with my current PC running Windows 98SE.
Therefore, there are some conditions to my suggestion about whether to upgrade.
-- If ver. 5 has one or more features that you really want to use now;
-- If ver. 4.0d is unstable on your PC;
-- If you don't need TMG-formatted HTML output;
-- If you don't use Wit2Note;
to the extent these are all true, then it would probably be a good idea to upgrade. Otherwise, my suggestion would be to wait. However, I would heartily endorse the idea of buying ver. 5 now, and trying it on for size, in any case. If nothing else, when the time comes to move to ver. 5 (and that time almost certainly will come) then you will not be moving to completely uncharted territory.
And that is *my* opinion.
