Happy New Year yourself, Jim:

By using the Short Place *field*, I can get output that the Short Place *template* cannot provide. First, I can use a part, or parts, of one or more of the "main" fields. Second, I can use abbreviations that do not appear anywhere in a "main" field at all. Here are two instructive examples:

====================
Addressee - (blank)
Detail - in
City - Salem Village (now Danvers), Salem
County - Essex County
State - Massachusetts
Country - (blank)
Postal - (blank)
Phone - (blank)
LatLong - (blank)
Temple - (blank)

Short Place Field - in Salem Village, Mass.
====================
Addressee - (blank)
Detail - probably in
City - Ascutneyville, Weathersfield
County - Windsor County
State - Vermont
Country - (blank)
Postal - WTHFDVT
Phone - (blank)
LatLong - (blank)
Temple - (blank)

Short Place Field - prob. Ascutneyville
====================

Note the substitution of the abbreviations "Mass." for "Massachusetts" and "prob." for "probably in". Note also the use of only parts of the CITY field. (My arrangement of the data in the "main" fields, e.g. prepositions in DETAIL, is not the current point; still, I would be happy to discuss that if anyone is interested [grin].)

It is my understanding that my uses of the Short Place field are well within the implications of the program's design. If that is not true, or if one or more of TMG 5's project management tools do not work as if the Short Place field is part of the Master Place List (MPL) record, then I am going to have to rethink some crucial data design decisions I have made - or, I am going to have to ignore the "offending" project management tools when I finally move to TMG 5. Cleanup of my place data itself would not be all that onerous. However, the impact on my printed reports and Second Site output would be significant.
