Hi

Greetings from an englishman in Dublin!

Counties in Ireland would follow the pattern "County Donegal" "County
Wicklow" etc. Within Ireland they are never referred to as "Donegal County"
or "County of Donegal" or even "The County Galway".

Ireland should be recorded in the Country field.

You raise an interesting point re the countries that form the UK or GB. To
be technical for a moment...England and Scotland are countries that
originally came together under the act of union 1707. Wales is not actually
a seperate country. It is a principality under England. In 1801 the next act
of union incorporated Ireland into the fold. When 26 counties set up the
irish free state, 6 remained within the political sphere of the United
Kingdom.

As an aside, there is a process of devolution that has been going on in the
UK in the last few years. Scotland has a devolved Parliament (because it is
a country). Wales does not have a parliament, but an assembly - as it is not
a country. Northern Ireland also has an Assembly - albeit suspended at
present.

The term Great Britain refers to England, Scotland and Wales.
The term "United Kingdom" is more accurately referenced "United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland". This is on all British Passports.
Ireland has never been part of "Great Britain" in the political sense.
However, any atlas includes Ireland as part of the "British Isles"!

I should note that I have tried to give an accurate factual explanation.
Welsh friends of mine would have a sense that Wales is a country. In many
respects most people regard this as so. Wales has its own rugby and soccer
teams that compete on the same basis as England and Scotland.

As clear as mud isn't it!

All,

Can someone provide an overview of the Irish Counties and how they record
them? Specifically are they always referred to as "County Donegal" or
"Donegal
County" or "County of Donegal?"

Also do you record Ireland in the country field? What bearing does Great
Britian or the United Kingdom have on this? How do Wales, Scotland and
England
enter into this?

So many questions...but THANKS in advance.

Kevin
