Teresa
I had left home and joined the Air Force by the time my family got "city
water." I can still remember living in a house on cut stone, about 3 feet
or so off the ground, not underpinned, and the only heat was a fireplace in
the living room and a wood cookstove. We had no indoor plumbing, an
outhouse back (North) of the house, and a well about 300 feet or so (East)
from the house (downhill). We had to "tote" water from the well for
drinking as well as for bathing. My Dad, my brother and I hand dug a second
well one year because the first one kept going dry. We did (and stiIl do)
live on top of the mountain. I can remember on really cold nights holding
our pillows in front of the fireplace until we'd see the heat vapor rising
and then running and jumping in bed. Mother would pile several quilts on
top of us to keep us warm. Now I can sit in my library in my home in front
of my secondary computer and download TMG, be using it while talking to
people all over the world about our common genealogical interests, or go to
specific websites and learn about specific items of genealogy, or visit my
own website, or go to another room and get on the main family computer, both
hooked together in network with broadband access, all while staying warm
from central heat and drinking bottled water. I'm 50 but a lot has changed
in that 50 years. This is a great country!
Eddie
