In TMG 4, I used to use a secondary pick list to look for folks about
whom I wasn't sure if they were still alive or not, based mostly on the
LIVING flag. Apparently, in TMG 5, one has to do that with a picklist
filter. Right?

(Btw, I use the simple picklist.)

What bothers me, tho, is I remember being told there's no more button
for stepping thru the picklist and I can't find a hot key to do it. Do
I really have to open the picklist, move the cursor and select (or
double-click) in order to go to the next person?

You will want to use the filtered Project Explorer in this case. You can
have it open as part of your layout and step through the list using the
previous/next arrows at the top. If you wish, you can size the PE window so only the
top portion with the arrows is showing. There is a good discussion in the
Help file called 'Project Explorer or Picklist?' which explains the advantages
of each.
