Subject: [TMG] TMG vs Unicode Character Use Issue
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2004 08:42:39 -0600

European languages from small countries have problems in TMG and this raises
a broader issue. How should we, genealogists, handle unusual letter
characters in TMG and elsewhere?

Major European languages are handled well [German umlauts], but Slovene is a
small country language that is not. It has three letters, c, z, and s with
a small 'v' shaped carrot over the letter. I spent a good deal of time
learning how to enter these letters into my genealogy history and programs
only to find out they display and print consistently only on my computer,
and even then not in some programs [TMG].

In TMG, I can get the letters to display correctly in the entry/edit window,
but when I click OK and look and the result in the "details" window, one
letter is not shown correctly. I questioned Wholly Genes, and they replied:

"You will not be able to use Slovene keyboard in entering data within TMG,
we do not support the Unicode characters. Have you tried to use the Windows
Character Map? This is found from the menu item Tools, External Utilities,
Windows Character Map."

I had the same result using the character map.

Further, and more to the point, when I corresponded with several people on
the Internet using the character letters, their computers interpreted the
letters according to the fonts they had installed. There doesn't seem to be
a clear cut way of using these infrequently used (outside of the nation
concerned) letters. It seems inevitable that confusing misspellings will
occur.

Ideas? Thoughts?
