Just wanted to say 'thanx and a hat tip' to all the folks who engaged in
this discussion over the past couple of days. I am going to continue trying
to work with TMG to see if there is an equitable solution to my problem.

Thought everyone would like to know about a little postscript to all this.
I received a tip from the APG mailing list to try a GEDCOM import into
RootsMagic. Guess what, folks: everything is there and it's *perfect.* In
RootsMagic, the Source from FTM is mapped to the Source, the Citation area
is empty (when that was originally the case), and (most importantly), there
is a separate and distinct area for Comments. It is here that all my FTM
Footnote information was transferred. When I run a sample report, each and
every one of my footnotes is there!

This means and can only mean one thing: FTM's GEDCOM export (and the file
itself which TMG can directly import) is indeed differentiating between the
Citation box and the Footnote box, and TMG's import engine is not built to
accommodate this GEDCOM element. Unfortunately, RM's interface and features
aren't nearly as sophisticated as TMG's, so I can't really consider this
application as meeting my needs. But it's good to know that all that would
have to be done to TMG is fix the import mapping to send the GEDCOM (or
original FTM) data to the Citation Detail field and everything would work.
(I still haven't been able to understand why the Footnote data from FTM
isn't even imported to the Citation Detail area of TMG when it's obviously
there - and clear and distinct - in RootsMagic.)
