Elizabeth, Laurie and others,
Yes, the filter will pick up either Syracuse or -Syracuse if you use
"contains" as in Any event/Any place/Contains. And I, personally, would
handle it the same way Laurie suggests, with exclusion marks.
However, Elizabeth, if you are set in having Place Styles handling this, I'm
not sure you aren't making it harder than it is....but I also think you
should declare victory over place styles!
Make your two place styles like you have suggested.
when entering the information at the tag level, enter it all...cem, city,
state, yada yada.
Pick the "right" place style for the situation at the top of the tag entry
box
You're done. And it appears that you "get it" to me.
but, that's all you do.
As far as going back to the MPL to pick a place....I just retype or use F3
and clean up the MPL later.
(See your statement below.) I do not go into MPL and "create"
anything.....it just collects the information as I enter the data. The
Master Place list would have one fewer row of information in it if you used
place styles instead of the exclusion marker technique. This is because the
data for the exclusion mark technique would have 1.) with exclusion markers
and 2.) without while with using place styles it would only have 2.)
without.
And finally, the place style IS attached to the individual's burial tag. so
if I change one person's burial tag to only the cemetery name....no others
are changed. I can change it back to something else...and it doesn't affect
anything else. Place styles just direct the sentence in how to handle the
[L] variable......so it substitutes your "rule" rather than US Standard
Place, which is TMG's "rule".
< snip>
"....And then, after doing that, I'd need to create two identical records in
the MPL--except that one of them would have some distinguishing entry in
an unused field to differentiate it from the other. Then one entry
would be assigned the CemeteryNameOnly Place Style, and the other would
be assigned the CemeteryFullLocn Place Style. This is because the place
style is attached to the MPL entry and not to an individual Tag. When I
entered a location in a Burial Tag, I'd be best advised to use F2 to
select from the MPL to make sure I get the one with the desired place
style."
That's my understanding of how this works but I am a new convert to Place
Styles and may not have all the nuances.
And Laurie's right....is anyone else having very little mail come through?
We must all be very busy doing other things. Good luck, Elizabeth. Keep us
posted on the baby.
Jill
