So these are not advertising pop-ups but look like open TMG folders? Do they
have any labels in their title bars to identify them? Or is it multiple
copies of the same window with a list of tmg folders and the word 'Open' in the
title bar?

Using Ctrl-Alt-Del should be a last resort when closing tmg after a hangup.
First see if you can go to to Help / Check for an Update. Click on that and
tmg will close normally and shut down all its open files. You can cancel the
update after tmg closes. Running tmg5 should not be a problem with Win XP and
512Mb memory. Do you have other programs open at the same time or a lot of
icons in your task tray? Have you run 'msconfig' from the Start/Run menu to see
what your computer is opening on startup - probably unbeknownst to you?

Can you identify any particular event or action which precedes a tmg hangup?
