It sounds like you do have a virus, just because you don't connect the
laptop to the Internet does not make it immune from a virus. You could
have transferred an infected file from the desktop computer to the laptop
computer. You NEED virus protection on every computer.

For a little more info on the pop ups, as I call them. The windows
are
actually the minimized "My Computer" window in XP. I can navigate to any
folder
or program in the hard drive from these pop ups, but I cannot open the
folders. The window must be inoperative as far as opening folders.
I transferred the upgrades to my laptop and used TMG with the same
results as the desk top. I do not use the laptop on the internet and I
have no virus
protection loaded. The laptop is used mainly as a back up for genealogy
and
finances and to take on trips. This rules out any conflict with Norton
anti-virus and any virus from the Internet.

Just thought I would elaborate in case someone else should have this
problem.
