Subject: Re: [TMG] Why I don't use Betty's Census--but you might (LONG)

Over the last few days, I've been thinking about posting a message similar to that of Darrell's, something to the effect of why I don't use Betty's (or anyone elses) system for censuses. However, my objections are somewhat different.
It is apparent that Betty (and Teresa and a number of others) have put a great deal of work, time and effort into these designs. If that works for you and it's what you want, then go for it.
But my objection is exactly that ... you're spending far too much time and effort manipulating the tool to fit such specific needs. That's a message that I think the "newbies" need to hear just as clearly as all the possibilities associated with custom roles and sentences and citations. It isn't necessary to do any of this at all.
Much depends on your ultimate goal of how you want to use TMG. I have no interest in the software program writing a narrative summary, but rather I want the program to organize my data and help guide my research efforts.
This is just another example of the multiple options offered by TMG. Make it simple, make it complex, make it suit whatever your needs may be.

Darrell,
I don't use the one source per roll of film either. I do however use the
name style as Betty does and find it quite useful. Like you, each person has
a different role, something I set up after I put the current sentences on my
website. I did that so that there were more options for output using
different languages. I think that the more ideas we put forth, the better
newbies will be though. When I first started out, I read Lee's and Terry's
pages hourly. The more ideas we can put forth, the easier it is for newbies
to figure out how they would like to set up their final system. I encourage
as many people who have thoroughly thought out their systems to do as Betty
did and put it in print. And I will gladly add it to my website if that
person has no where else to post it. Or a link if they do.
