For a system with resource problems, one thing that I have found that
speeds up TMG immensely is turning off my antivirus software and my
firewall software. The change for me was immediate and dramatic. The
program really seemed to appreciate the added headroom. I now do this if
I am going to work completely off-line (which is most of the time for
me), and I am always certain that I have done a complete scan on the
system, including non-executables and compressed files with heuristic
scanning enabled. I can always crank these programs back up in short
order if I want to go online.

ZoneAlarm (my firewall) seems to use a lot of resources. Depending on
the antivirus software settings, it may be scanning files of all types
(not just executables) every time they are copied, created, run or
renamed. And, it is always idling but alert in the background.

I'm running an older system (Win98, 350mHz, 224 Mb) and this has really
made a tremendous difference. A person would just need to be careful
that the antivirus program has recently scanned the hard drive and do
not use any removable media that hasn't been scanned.
