Gary,
I agree with you totally. I used a very simple method for years when I
used UFT. I only decided to get more complicated when I finally moved to
TMG since I was almost done with census work and was ready for it to finally
be output in a way that I didn't have to tweak it each time I wanted to do a
report (which is very time consuming as well) The beauty is that it was
fairly easy to implement once I was ready.
Betty's system, or mine, or anyone elses is a little time consuming to set
up, but once set up, takes no more time to use than any other system. The
best part about having the information online, is now the next person
doesn't have to think out the processes. They can merely pick and choose
which parts work for them. And that is another beauty of TMG. I don't use
just the census roll for my source, but rather the head of household. Yet I
do use most everything else in Betty's system. You can tweak each system to
fit your needs when the time is right.

Over the last few days, I've been thinking about posting a message similar
to that of Darrell's, something to the effect of why I don't use Betty's (or
anyone elses) system for censuses. However, my objections are somewhat
different.

It is apparent that Betty (and Teresa and a number of others) have put a
great deal of work, time and effort into these designs. If that works for
you and it's what you want, then go for it.

But my objection is exactly that ... you're spending far too much time and
effort manipulating the tool to fit such specific needs. That's a message
that I think the "newbies" need to hear just as clearly as all the
possibilities associated with custom roles and sentences and citations. It
isn't necessary to do any of this at all.

Much depends on your ultimate goal of how you want to use TMG. I have no
interest in the software program writing a narrative summary, but rather I
want the program to organize my data and help guide my research efforts.

This is just another example of the multiple options offered by TMG. Make it
simple, make it complex, make it suit whatever your needs may be.
