Have you verified that the "Center the current window" item is
actually grayed out? It's supposed to always be available, especially
when all others are grayed out, and in my experience it is. So you
might try it again and see.

That sounds like a possibility. It might explain why beta testers, who
I expect quickly turn off the cue cards, are not seeing the problem.
