I'll try to answer what I can. First, to find your backup. It is in the
folder C:\Documents and Settings\Family\My Documents\. To go quickly to that
folder, click the Windows XP Start button and look at the top for 'My
Documents'.

The backup file name (Jeane 2004-04-29 15-12-52.sqz) includes project name
'Jeane', the date and time, and the file name extension .sqz.

Thus:
Project year-month-day hour-minute-second .sqz
Jeane 2004-04-29 15-12-52 .sqz
Jeane 2004 April 29 3:12 & 52 sec .sqz

The time is 24-hour time.

The .sqz file extension is similar to a .zip extension, indicative of a
compressed file.

This gives you a unique file name and has the advantage of sorting in order
in your folder. You also have the option of giving your backup a number, like
1,2,3,4.

It would be safest if you could backup to an external medium, in case your
computer hard drive should fail. I agree it was great when we could use a
floppy disk in A, but apparently those days are gone forever - now that programs
are more complicated and backup files are larger. Zip drives (external and
internal) are reliable, as are external hard drives and USB flash memory. You
may want to consider one of those alternatives to your C drive.

If Tech Support has walked you through two backup methods, I would continue
to use them, alternating to be safe. Perhaps they suggested 2 backups - a
simple quick Project backup and a more comprehensive backup including
customizations. In your Documents and Settings folder, a larger-sized backup file might
have been backed up with customizations.

I recommend against deleting BACKUP PROJECT and MY BACKUP. I doubt you can
delete BACKUP PROJECT in any event, just modify the options. There is no need
to delete either one.

Customizations include layout files other than default Standard; custom
toolbars if you made any, modifications you made to reports, accents or filters you
added, etc. If you have made any changes there, you will want to include
customizations in your backup.

Hope this helps. Please ask again if this is not clear.

Could someone please help me with this.
I have the sample project: I do not backup this one
I have a Practice project: I do not backup this one
I have only one project that I need to backup. It is labeled Jeane__PJC.
I press the red X in right upper corner. The message reads: Would you like
to back up the C:\program files\The Master Genealogist\Projects\Jeane__PJC now?
I select yes.
The following is displayed:
BACKUP ALL (Project plus Customizations) I have studied the
documentation enough that I think I know what this means, and since I have no
customizations, I ignore this.
PROJECT CUSTOMIZATIONS: I ignore this
BACKUP PROJECT: This one I think was entered when I was being walked through
the process by someone in technical support for TMG
MY BACKUP: This is another one I think was entered same way.
Jeane Backup: This is the one seems to me to match the name of my project
and the one I should use, and then I would delete the two above: BACKUP PROJECT
and MY BACKUP.
But I need to know if this is correct, and where do I go to see something
that tells me I have a current backup made for the project named "Jeane Backup".
I have windows XP but I can't find a backup under windows, only in TMG and in
other separate applications. I hate it that I can't backup the project to
Drive A on a 3 1/2 floppy.
On to Step 2:
The box is checked for current project.
Select Project is grey. It reads: C:\program files\The Master
Genealogist\Projects\Jeane__PJC.
The box is not checked for "generate archive name automatically"
Select Backup File is not grey and reads:
C:\Documents and Settings\Family\My Documents\Jeane 2004-04-29 15-12-52.sqz.

I would like to backup more often, I find that I postpone entering because I
have to relearn the process.

I hope to learn where I can see when my last backup occurred to "clean up"
the Step 1 display, maybe.

And for Step 2, hope to understand what those fields and boxes are telling
me. It's likely very elementary to many of you. I do thank you.
