I have used extremely long external text files (some of more than 10,000
characters) without any problems. The important thing about this is that
the files must be text only. If they are created in a word processor, it
is not unusual to have some word processor control (non-printing and
un-seen) control characters in the file.

If you are having problems of this sort, I suggest opening the file in
something like NOTEPAD or in TMG's Text Editor, then edit out the junk
characters shown there.
