Subject: All this time: Grey Place Labels

I always wondered and never asked why the data entry screen for place labels was grey. I was surprised I could actually enter information in those grey fields, it seemed to have no effect on anything. But Wait, I now see under Preferences (advanced mode) the place labels in my project are grey because they have been selected as Disabled. That explains the grey, but not the reason for the particular option and if it is not the default, then it is my error.
I'm worried about having created adverse results somewhere. I hope this is an easy question for someone and that I'll be able to learn if I should now select the Enabled option for this feature.
