I expect you will have seen that there are three options on Preferences for
Place and Name Labels -- Enabled, Disabled, and Available only with
mouse. The different options allow you to change the various label (or
not) as you wish. No choice affects your data in any way. The labels
assigned by default or by you really have no effect on the data except as
_you_ see it. So it you have created Custom labels, you may change to a
different label (i.e., Detail to Village, City to Township, or County to
Parish, etc.). The data that you enter into the field remains the same
regardless and prints in the position implied by its location regardless of
the Label assigned to it.

The Preference option is there to allow you to change the Labels each time
you enter data (Enabled), not allow the Label changes (e.g., letting the
Name or Place Style make any changes) (Disabled), or allowing you to change
Labels only if you wish (Available only with Mouse). With Disabled and
Available only with mouse, tabbing does not take you through the Labels but
only through the data fields.
