1. Infrared is line-of-sight -- but -- it can bounce. If you don't believe it, try bouncing your TV remote control off the walls while blocking the direct line-of-sight. Mine actually works better when it is bounced.
2. Infrared cannot come through house wiring.
3. Is it really infrared? Cover the infrared port with something very opaque and thick (it takes more than just a sheet of paper). If the icon is still triggered, then the gremlin is not outside the computer.
My old laptop infrared would frequently trigger at certain worksites I went to. Since these were computer rooms, I expected some infrared device was responsible. Covering the infrared window with electrical tape solved the issue.

A couple of people have mentioned to me that infrared is line-of-sight,
which is true--my parents used to use it to print, and the printer and
laptop had to be properly aligned in order to work. However, something is
definitely triggering the infrared controller, and has only been doing so
for the past few days.
