I had to smile at your choice of example, it is only my generation that went
to college, otherwise the ancestors were laborers or farmers with one
exception and you might get to help with that one later. A great-great
grandfather holds two patents for smoke grates in Montreal. A couple of
Montreal City Directories listed him as a Patent Holder and the Canadian
Intellectual Property Office went back to their archives for the 1880s and
found both of them.

I made a like change to your suggestion. I made my father a mechanics
helper at a bus company. That worked out. I remember him talking about
driving a big city bus through narrow streets in Boston before the family
moved to California.
