This is most likely old news for most but some of the default sentences
seem to be awkward for the narrative. For burial date, it says "burial
date" and and since I do not have the exact burial date (only year) it
mentions burial before death. For education it says "she was grammar
school at Old Orchard". Most importantly, for those still living, and the
living tag is correct, the narrative clearly states "she died".
So my first question is how do I get the narrative to stop killing me off
before my time? Secondly, should I expect most sentences to be odd and
require editing? Is there a way to get the burial to come after the death
in the narrative if I don't have the complete date?

To get the burial after the death you can use the sort date which doesn't
print anywhere. You have to be in advanced mode (in preferences) to use the sort
date. If someone died 1 Jan 2000 use a sort date of a [after] 1 Jan 2000.
You can have different sentences for each tag by using roles. I'm not sure
what the default education tag reads (I changed my long ago) but in your case.
But e.g.
[P] <and [PO]> was <[M]> <[D]> <[L]>
enter "in grammar school" in the memo field and it will read what you want
She was in grammar school at Old Orchard
Add a role for Graduated with a sentence like
[P] <and [PO]> graduated <from [L]> <[D]> <[M]>
put "with a aw degree" in the memo and you will get something like
He graduated from Harvard in 1966 with a law degree.
