My mother told me this a long time ago. In a certain small town in New York, an attorney, while reviewing the local codes, discovered an old law that was still on the books, which stated that it was illegal (and a fine and jail term would be imposed) for any woman weighing more than 200 pounds to ride a horse through the town wearing short pants. The lawyer decided to put the statute to the test, and arranged for an acquaintance to violate the law and a policeman to arrest her. The case was brought before the judge, but he dismissed it on the grounds that the horse was not wearing short pants!
