When a Research Task has been attached to a person and/or an event (Tag)
the notepad icon will be "lit" (turns green). The notepad icon takes up
too much space for Tags to display in the "T" column of the Person View and
thus the "check mark" is used in that situation.

Depending on where you want the Research Task attached, you should be in
the focus of that record. Having an individual displayed as the focus
person of the Details window will ensure a person Task is attached to that
person. Similarly having a Tag Entry Screen displayed ensures the Task
will be attached to that Tag. So if you want to create a Task for
locating a death certificate for a Death Tag then you should have the Death
Tag Entry
Screen displayed and either press the [F12] key or click on the notepad
icon button (upper right of the window) to display the Research Log. When
the Research Log is displayed, note the Focus shown on the right lower part
of the window. This should display "An Event". Clicking on the [Add]
button will allow you to add the new Task and the Event entry should be
displayed in the upper part of the window.

Once a Research Task has been created, you may edit the Task to add a
person, a Tag, a Source and/or a Repository. To do this, open the Task and
note the four entries near the top of the window for Person, Event, Source,
and Repository. If the Task is a General Research Task, then all four will
have the notation "Not assigned yet". If the Task is a person Task, then
the name and ID# will be the Person entry. Similarly an event number and
description (for Event), Source Abbreviation and Source # (For Source),
and Repository Abbreviation and Repository # (for Repository) will be shown.

You may add or change any of these entries as desired by clicking on the
adjacent [binoculars icon] button to display the appropriate Picklist. In
the case of Event, the Master Event List (MEL) window will appear. In each
case, locate and highlight the desired record and click on the [Select]
button.

If you have a person Research Task and wish to change it to an event type
Research Task, open the Task and click on the Event [binocilars icon]
button to display the MEL window. In the MEL window, find and highlight
the Tag to which you wish the Task attached and click on the [Select]
button. This will add the appropriate entry showing the Task attachment.

Hope this helps -
