No, Don't do this. Then all the events that were pointing to that place
(assuming there might be one) will now be pointing to that state.

I have many thousands of places that are not used for any events. Is there
a
way of removing them from the Master Place List (MPL)? I am looking for an
easy and simple way of removing them. I am at present using this method:
Open Tools - MPL then highlighting one of the places and checking the
Events
button, if not events then wait a few seconds then Edit the place and
manually delete the entries, the wait another several seconds for the
program to "collect places" and to "update the MPL" The whole process for
removing one place takes 20 to 25 seconds, very time consuming even with no
other programs running.
If you edit the unused places by leaving only the state and use the same
state, optimize will combine them to a single entry, assuming they are all
US
standard, and have no comments or start stop dates ect.

P.S. Would be nice if there were an easier way to clean up the place file.
I have spent a lot of time cleaning mine up.
