If you run OPTIMIZE, and a place does not go away, then it either:

* Does point to an event or repository

* Has a start or stop date

* Has a short place

* Has a comment attached



There is no need to edit the places to delete information, you just need to
figure out why it isn't optimizing. But somewhere it does point to
something. If there are no events in the MPL, then check to see if it
points to a repository, has a stop or start date, or a short place, or a
comment attached.
