I think there is some merit in considering the IGI as an index only. When you go to FamilySearch.com and find your ancestor, it is often difficult to discern where the information came from. The screen may look like a small family group sheet or individual record but the ordinance information on it came from one place (church records) and the vitals came from another ... sometimes you can't quite be sure whether they are from member submissions or church membership records or both. The little paragraph at the bottom is sometimes helpful and sometimes not. All of this leads me to believe that the web page is not much more than an index to a large database which is itself compiled from many sources.

I would like to run this question by one of the church members I know (if I can find him) who used to be head of the church family history department and see what his response is. If I am able to find him and get a response I will post it to the list.
