>I think there is some merit in considering the IGI as an index only. When you go to FamilySearch.com and find your ancestor, it is often difficult to discern where the information came from. The screen may look like a small family group sheet or individual record but the ordinance information on it came from one place (church records) and the vitals came from another ... sometimes you can't quite be sure whether they are from member submissions or church membership records or both. The little paragraph at the bottom is sometimes helpful and sometimes not. All of this leads me to believe that the web page is not much more than an index to a large database which is itself compiled from many sources.

I have no trouble identifying which IGI entry is an Extracted record or
which is a church member Submitted entry. At the bottom of the entry is
the Source Information
Extracted records refer to Batch numbers beginning with C = Christening,
E or M = Marriage, and J = Death/Burial etc. The Resource Guide
entitled Finding an IGI Source gives the details of the batch numbers.
My copy is quite old but I think there is an up to date version on the
FS site.
There are are Temple Records which I don't think are on the web site and
Submitted Records which have an F, T9xxx or all digits or none at all
for more recent submittals.
I am not an LDS member but have used the IGI records for many years.
