David,

High resolution images are good for printing because the print device can
often produce 300 DPI or more. A photo designed to print 3" x 3" might be
stored as 100 DPI, 200 DPI, or 300 DPI but the printing application and the
printer driver will adjust thing such that it prints the intended size. The
more resolution, the better, up to a point. Higher resolution will produce a
better quality print.

For images displayed on a monitor, higher resolution can be a problem
because the monitor has a fixed resolution that is often lower than the
image. Monitors usualy are somewhere between 72 and 100 DPI. A 900 by 900
pixel image could be printed 3" x 3" at 300 DPI, but on a monitor it will be
9" x 9" or larger.

If you allow the display application--in the case of Second Site, the web
browser--to scale our example image such that is uses 3" x 3" of screen
space, then 89% of the detail is lost. Browsers do an OK job of scaling but
photo programs usually do better. Also, if you put that image on the web at
full resolution, and then change the HTML to scale the image down to
300x300, then the user pays the price (in time) of downloading a large image
but only sees the image quality of the scaled down version.

Second Site has a special feature to enable you to store high-resolution
images as exhibits, but use lower-resolution versions for your site. See the
Alternate Image Folder description on the following web page:

http://www.johncardinal.com/ss/secexhibits.htm

TMG Utility can help you create the lower-resolution images. See the "Export
Images feature:

http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/exportimages.htm

I wrote specific directions for how to use that feature to make
lower-resolution images for use with SS:

http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/exportimages.htm#task2

Hope this helps.

John
