This has been a longstanding source of irritation.[1] What you do:
- Open a folder window. Any one will do; My Documents is as good as any.
- Tools>Folder Options > File Types tab > GED
- Advanced button
- New button
- Action is "EditGED" (or anything but Open)
- Application used to perform action is [notepad.exe "%1"] (without [])(or
whatever you want; in case you want to use another app, use the browse
button to go to the file's path).
- Click OK
- This is the magic part - select the action you've just created, and click
the 'Set Default' button. FTW will continue to hijack the 'Open' action
every time it's opened. But GEDCOM files will open in Notepad because Open
is no longer the default application.
This is off the top of my head (it's been a while), so it may need a tweak
or two. Also, it's for Win XP, so there may be small changes on other
versions of Windows. But the steps should be similar. You can still get a
GEDCOM to FTM by either right-clicking the file and selecting Open, or by
importing it from within FTM, but FTM will no longer open it when you
(double) click.
[1] If you're curious, go to http://groups.google.com/ Advanced Group
Search, and search soc.genealogy.computing for something like [FTM gedcom
file association].
