This is a rather open ended question in that we do not know which options
you included in your desktop (?) backup file. There are over twenty
different kinds of files associated with configuration of TMG. A list of
these for v5 (mostly the same for v6) is shown in Chapter 2 of "Getting the
Most Out of The Master Genealogist". Over half of these files are rarely
changed from installation and need not be included in a backup. Thus the
only configuration files that need to be included in a backup are the one
that you have customized.
The configuration files that you will most likely customize are APP.INI
(Advanced settings), *.LO (Layout files), *.TBR (Custom Toolbar, *.FL?
(Filer definitions, *.ACC (Accents), *.RPT (Report Definitions), and
Timeline files (*.DBT, *.DBT, and *.DOC ). There are others but these are
the most commonly customized files.
With the exception of the APP.INI file, a straight copy of any of the above
files from the desktop (?) into the laptop would be reasonable and would
work. On the other hand, depending on the file configuration of your
desktop hard drive in comparison with that of your laptop, the APP.INI file
might have some entries that could be incorrect. In most cases, you can
straighten this out in Preferences very easily. My main point here is that
if TMG and its data files are installed in similar folders on both your
desktop and your laptop you will not have a problem. But if the
installation and/or data is installed in different folders, then there is
potential for some minor conflict -- at least until you can make changes in
Preferences.
If this leaves you confused, don't worry. Just let us know in what way
your laptop configuration is not correct compared to your desktop (?) and
we can give you a more complete answer.
Hope this helps -
