Well I have tried all suggestions made by Teresa, John and Lorna (thanks)
and it has turned out to be Languages that are tripping me up. I am using
UK Version 6.01 and having the sentence structure screen set to English(UK)
I did not notice that the General (screen) of the Report Definition Screen
showed the Output Language as English (US). Changed it to English (UK) and
I am now smiling again.

Sorry to waste people's time.
