In the world of photography, digital photography that is, metadata is
the information in the file that describes or imparts additional
information about the file's [main] data -- namely about the picture.

Some of the metadata is written by the camera when it creates the file,
and some is written by the person who further manipulates the picture
data on the computer.

Some examples of metadata from the camera: date and time, exposure
speed, ISO, f-stop etc.
Some examples of metadata written via computer: new name for the photo,
location taken, people in the photo, further descriptions, etc.
