Here's an update on my efforts to print an informative contact sheet. I
first went with Photoshop, but couldn't find any way for it to print the
IPTC data (where I had written the approximate date, the source of the
photos, possible ID, etc.). Then I remembered that IMatch, which I also
have, is pretty good at displaying this data. Somehow I never use IMatch
often enough, so I forget the different things it can do and of course
haven't even learned most of them.

In IMatch I was able to create a 3-column, 4-row contact sheet with the
file name and the IPTC data under each image. It will take some tinkering
to get the ideal sheet, but IMatch's contact-sheet creator is very flexible
and you can save all the different versions you want--tiny images, big
images, 200dpi, 300dpi, text on bottom, text on side, etc. I can now see
which photos scanned at the archive need additional data, which ones had
the studio on the back only (I am trying to date them using what I'm
finding out about the studios, and by what the archivist told me about
local tintype use)... so, I think this will be very successful. When I come
up with a somewhat larger-print format, I can also print out sheets for my
parents to look at and add info to.

I wonder whether at some point Bob could come up with an option to use an
image's IPTC description in the caption field? We wouldn't want it to be
required, because I'm sure everyone uses IPTC descriptions differently
(when using them at all), but it would be kind of neat. This batch of
photos is nowhere near ready to put into TMG because I don't know who any
of them are--just that the albums belonged to my ancestors--but there are
those other 2000 or so photos to deal with!
