If you created two roles and place one person in each role it does work, its
what I do.

Kevin,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I tried your idea, but it didn't work
because you were talking about the sentence for the Principal in the report.
My problem was with the sentence for the Witnesses when there are more than
one.

Suppose we have two Witnesses (James and Nathaniel) to the 1810 census tag
for Samuel Magruder. We want our census sentence for each Witness to read:
"<name of witness> was probably one of the free white males, age 10 to 16,
in Samuel Magruder's household, on the 1810 Census of Montgomery county,
MD." The question is which name variable will produce either "James" or
"Nathaniel" as necessary. Options include W, WO, R, RG, RF, etc.

When the Witness sentence said:
[R:free white male 10-16] was probably one of the free white males, age 10
to 16, in [R:Head of Family]'s household, on the 1810 Census <of [L]>.
<[WM].><[M0]>
the sentence for both witnesses ends up like this:
"James and Nathaniel was probably one of the free white males, age 10 to 16,
in Samuel Magruder's household, on the 1810 Census of Montgomery county,
MD."

After the Witness sentence was changed to:
[W] was probably one of the free white males, age 10 to 16, in [R:Head of
Family]'s household, on the 1810 Census <of [L]>. <[WM].><[M0]> the sentence
for each witness said:
"He was probably one of the free white males, age 10 to 16, in Samuel
Magruder's household, on the 1810 Census of Montgomery county, MD."

That works OK for me, but it seems to be the opposite of what I expected
after reading GTMOTMG (pp 76-77) and some related messages here.

Further thoughts anyone?

Subject: RE: [TMG] Getting Multiple Names to show in a Role

Kay,

Because they each have the same role. Which is why I use separate roles for
my 1840 census tag such as:

FrWhMale00-05
FrWhMale00-05M1
FrWhMale00-05M_Last

I use the FrWhMale00-05 role when there is only one person listed in the
census for that role.

I use the FrWhMale00-05M1 and FrWhMale00-05M_Last when there are two in the
household listed in the census.

So the above roles are enclosed in < > in the head of household sentence so
that they only print when they are used. AND the sentence reads differently
if I use the "single" person versus the sentence with two people such as:

<[R:FrWhMale00-05] a free white male between the age of newborn and under 5
years><, [R:FrWhMale00-05M1] and [R:FrWhMale00-05M_Last], as free white
males between the age of newborn and under 5 years>

This makes for long sentences in the tag, BUT I don't get multiple people
printing in someone else's narrative report as you describe below. The
individual role sentences will then ONLY contain "1" person which was my
goal. I also did not like seeing more then one person in the roles.

This also make for a lot of roles and setup time, but to me it has been
worth the effort. Also if I would ever find a "third" person because I
found a census record that had three, I just simply add a new role to that
tag only, bingo, I'm done.

Thank you for your time,

Then why am I getting the following output for my 1810 census tag in a
Journal report (TMG v6.2)?

iii.NATHANIEL HAWKINS was born on 10 Aug 1795.
James and Nathaniel was probably a free white male, age 10 and under
16, in Samuel Magruder's household, on the 1810 Census of Montgomery county,
MD.
iv.JAMES HAWKINS JR was born on 31 Dec 1797.
James and Nathaniel was probably a free white male, age 10 and under
16, in Samuel Magruder's household, on the 1810 Census of Montgomery county,
MD.

Both have the role of free wh male 10-16 with a default sentence of:
[RF:free wh male 10-16] was probably a free white male, age 10 and
under 16, in [R:Head of Family]'s household, on the 1810 Census <of [L]>.
<[M3].><[M0]>

With all the posting to this TMG List, it's a wonder we get anything else
accomplished.

Thanks for your help.
