I started to do this by having eg Son01, Son02, Son03 etc roles, but
decided to have one Son role and simply use one of the WM fields (I use
[WM9]) to record their individual names. I then use [WM9] as the
individuals name in the Witness sentence for role of Son.
In my Head of Household role I also use the same approach (using [W7] in my
case) to list the names of others in the household and their relationship
to the head. My Head of Household role sentence includes <Also recorded in
the household with him [M7].>
eg if [W7] = "were his wife Jane, his daughter Alice and his sons Henry,
William, Malcolm and Ernest"
then I get "Also recorded in the household with him were his wife Jane, his
daughter Alice and his sons Henry, William, Malcolm and Ernest"
Using multiple role names for each role is quite doable (see Teresa's
message on "RE: [TMG] Witness roles for obituaries" of Mon 13 Jun 2005 as
an example) but it doesn't allow you to have the grammar the way I wanted
because you don't know which role will be used last (or a way to control
the output even if you did) - so in my example above you would get "Also
recorded in the household with him were his wife Jane, his daughter Alice,
his sons Henry, William, Malcolm and Ernest" ie a comma after Alice and no
"and" to connect the last used role. Using [W7] easily gets around this
problem with just a little more typing in the original data entry for my
Census Tag.
I think it is great that TMG is so flexible that we can achieve what we
want in different ways that we each feel comfortable using.
