My thoughts based on what Astrid and Darrell seem to want - and since I would like to see a combination of the two:

Master Exhibit/Image (Source) List:
Record number (TMG internal use only - links based on this)
Path to file (for external exhibits; can be unique but doesn't have to be)
field(s) for storing internal exhibit info
User reference
Date
Place created
Creator/Author/Artist
Repository (MPL)

Exhibit Link to Person or Event Tag:
pretty much the same as the current structure except links to the Master Exhibit/Image (Source) List instead of directly linking to the external exhibit or holding the internal exhibit
contains info to link to person or event tag and specific info like:
Title/Caption
Description
Topic
Reference

I think that a "full blown" solution to exhibit handling will be as flexible as source handling is now. That is, there will be certain hardcoded fields, but the user will control many of the details.

For me, in the short term: I think the important thing is to create one or more fields that contain a description of the exhibit _per_se_. This field/these fields should be linked only to the exhibit and not a Tag or person.

In more detail, I eventually see a "Master Exhibit List" with **something like** the following fields:

Record number (TMG internal use only - links based on this)
Path to file (for external exhibits; unique!)
Path to image map (for external exhibits only???)
User reference
Title
Description
Date
Sort date
Place created
Creator/Author/Artist
Repository (MPL)

I think these are all pretty straightforward, with the possible exception of the "Path to image map" item. This is for creating clickable areas in the image in HTML (say "Second Site").

The Exhibit Log would then link to the Exhibit Record number.

Frankly, I would much rather see a rewrite of place handling than a rewrite of exhibit handling. Still, something along the above lines for exhibits would be very nice indeed; and *both* would be most excellent, no doubt.
