Following John's and Bob's explanations, I can see how the problem with
"after" dates came about - as the result of a well-meant attempt to
satisfy researchers' perceived need for an "inclusive" definition of
"after".

Unfortunately the assumption of this definition leads to absurdity. This
is seen in the Help file where, under Chronological Sort, examples are
given of how dates are sorted by the program.

The table gives the following sequence:

after 1975
after June 1975
30 June 1975

Logically, this is exactly back to front and should be:

30 June 1975
after June 1975
after 1975

The table also shows:

after 30 June 1975
before 1 July 1975

This sequence is impossible.
