Terry asked a fair question:
>>Why do you use Primary tags only in reports? That leads to all sorts

I don't use primary only in narrative reports, but I do preserve the option
for myself for some of the detail reports like FGS, ID, List of ..., etc. In
some FGS reports, for instance, I wouldn't want certain highly-speculative
relationships printed because they are too readily accepted as gospel, so I
use Primary Only, even with sources attached. Same in my Master Data Sheet
(a combo of ID and tree reports). List reports for research may need to be
focused on primary events for someone (for situations where I'm pretty sure
I'll find what I need) or on all events (in cases where I'm allowing time to
really dig). Most of those are also selected by tag-type, of course, but
since I do occasionally use the Primary-only to screen out low-certainty
tags, I prefer to be consistent about it.

Anticipating your next question, yes, I could use surety control instead,
but I found early on that it was much harder for me to identify why (or
whether) a particular bit of information was missing. Just too many levels
of granularity for me to track, and mixes purpose and presentation in my
view. I can and do have some tags that I feel relatively comfortable with
that are only surety 1, for instance -- in those cases I will still feel OK
publishing the conclusion because it's the preponderance of evidence, not
the quality of it, that validates the hypothesis. But selecting surety to
include those events in printing means including lower quality
conclusions/sources or rejiggering the sureties in a way that doesn't
reflect my comfort with the data source. (My surety model revolves around
the source quality more than the quality of the data, with the exception
of -.) For me, the crude cut of Tag Type + Primary/All/All+Witnessed (and
surety=any) is much easier to control, and I mark the events/tags that I'm
not yet willing to own as non-primary.

DeAnna,

Why do you use Primary tags only in reports? That leads to all sorts
of difficulties, this being a rather minor one.
