In such a case, I suggest entering a another place record. For both (or
all if you have three or more) place records, you can enter a Start year
and End Year. Thus you can have place records that are pertinent to
specific events. For example, you may have a place record for
Faringdon in Berkshire and another place record for Faringdon in
Oxfordshire. The Berkshire record would have an End year of 1974 while the
Oxfordshire record would have a Start year of 1974.
Now_IF_ Faringdon happened to have been in a different county before say
1900, then you would change the Start year for the Birkshire record to 1900
and create a new place record with an End year of 1900 for the earlier
county. The result would be three place records for Faringdon -- each with
a different county and showing the Start and End years for one (Berkshire)
and the others would only have the End year (earlier county) and the Start
year (Oxfordshire) like this:
City/Town County Start Year End year
Faringdon early county 1900
Faringdon Berkshire 1900 1974
Faringdon Oxfordshire 1974
If Faringdon had been formed out of say three nearby villages, then you
might have place records for each of the villages in the appropriate County
[including (or not) a City/Town as appropriate] and the Start years as
appropriate and the End year being when Faringdon was formed. Then you
would enter a Start Year for the first Faringdon record.
In most cases, if a place record is not used in TMG (not attached to a Tag
or Repository) then it will be deleted during the Optimizing
procedure. However, any place record having a Start year, End year, or a
Short Place or Comment entry will never be deleted. So you can have a
series of place records showing the general history of that area even if
one or more of the place records are not used.
Hope this helps -
