Thank you, Kevin and Ian,

I guess I will have to think about it. Maybe I am paranoid but I would be
afraid of someone breaking the combination or cutting through the cable. I
may look into getting a laptop bag that has wheels to make it easier to
wheel with me. I will be soon looking into getting a PDA to replace my
organizer but do not know if I would like it for family history. I am
concerned the screen might be too small for my eyes as far as family history
is concerned.

Judy,

A lot of laptops have a "connection" point where you can attach lock down
cables which are looped around a table leg for example. (I believe a "Lock
Slot") Here's an example of a product;

If you don't have this security feature on your laptop for these kits, you
can still buy kits that use super strong adhesive or other methods. Here's
a sample website that shows some of them. (I know nothing about this
vendor, just found it by doing a search)

I have to admit I've never bothered with these, guess I'm too paranoid!
Besides Pocket Genealogist development keeps me too busy to do research
anymore. (and if I should ever have the time again, I'll be using a PDA
instead of a laptop... My laptop has become so ancient that it's too painful
to use anymore!)

What do you mean about your laptop being "locked down"? I have not taken my
laptop to do research yet but my concern has been that I would have to carry
it around with me to keep it from being stolen especially in larger places
like libraries.

Hi Holly

I can't help with the vest part ---- although I think that is a great idea
--- but I have a comment about the purse issue. When I am doing research at
a place such as the Family History Library, I use a little passport holder
that hangs around my neck for my most important, can't- lose-or-get-stolen
stuff. I put my driver's license, credit card, and my money in it. It is so
light that I hardly even know it is there. Then I put the rest of my girly
goodies in my laptop's case. All the important stuff (my laptop and the
passport holder) are all "locked down" so I am free to move about.
This might not be the solution you are looking for, but it may help someone
else.
