Not really much of a concern in the settings we work in; most libraries
won't allow scissors -- certainly not anything strong enough to cut the
cable -- and someone hitching up a table leg for fuddering through
combinations will usually be obvious enough that tablemates would question
or confront them. Someone might get away with it in an airport, but I think
it a lot less likely in most gen libraries or courthouses.

When I went to SLC years ago I took a laptop (this was pre-Palm days) and
left it on the table the whole time while I was browsing stacks. I'd just
poke my head out every so often to check on it. No one bothered it. Never
had a problem at all. I wouldn't leave the *room* and leave it there, of
course, but just there on the table ... no biggie. In fairness I wouldn't
try the same as light-heartedly in the local gen collection, which is housed
in the basement of a public library that gets heavy use.
