Did you try just putting a 'space' in the field? For some reason I thought
there was an option to delete all ...

Attempts to get John's utility to set the reference fields to blank or
null failed. However, I achieved my end objective by letting his utility
set the reference fields to codes - all starting with alphanumeric
characters. You see, my ultimate objective was to use the reference
field sort to manage the sequence of the Journal report. By selecting
major surnames and setting their endline reference fields to 1,2,3 and
so forth, and using the reference field sort, I get the ancestor lines
printed after each name to follow those surnames, instead of having a
mixed bag of lines.
