For those wanting to know, RSS is simple to use. I downloaded a file
recommended by Dick Eastman and in seconds had it set up. Once the file is
loaded, you can set up each of your rootsweb lists as an RSS file by simply
going to Rootsweb.com and finding the mailing list you want. Go to the
BROWSE ARCHIVES link, and at the bottom of the page will be an RSS button.
Click on that link and copy the URL that comes up. In your reader, select
ADD NEW FEED, and paste this URL into the reader. The next thing you can do
is name the feed. I set mine up in folders by state, then by county. It
took me a while to set up the feeds, but once they were set up, every time
you are online the reader checks all the feeds and downloads the updated
files. On a DSL line, this takes about a second. I now have TMG and my
private email sent to my email address, and the rest are done as feeds. IF
I see something I want to reply to, I can easily copy the message and reply.

REMEMBER many rootsweb lists require you to be subscribed to reply to them.

The great thing is, many of the lists I am RSSing, I only want to see one
surname, so instead of getting emails from the daily, I can check the RSS
feed once a month and delete that which isn't pertinent to me.

I couldn't believe how easy it was to set up and how fast the posts
downloaded.

That's the sort of thing I was looking for, Teresa. Unfortunately switching
services isn't an option for her -- their neighborhood is *very* old and
isn't wired for either DSL *or* cable, and sadly AOL is the most
cost-effective dial-up for her at the moment. We're on the lookout for
something else, but meanwhile I wanted to be ready with an option.

I had completely forgotten about the RSS capability, Teresa, as I haven't
yet taken the time to install it for the minor lists I'm interested in. (TMG
comes to my inbox -- easier to sort & control.) I can't imagine her face if
200 TMG emails landed in her box, but RSS is much more manageable.

Thanks for the reminder, Teresa!

Fran,
Not sure but an RSS feed might work better for her. You might want to check
that out.

I should have added that I usually download my email, then read it offline,
although sometimes (like now) I read it online as soon as it arrives.
