Bob,
>What TMG Template did you use?
I didn't use a TMG Template, because I couldn't figure out which one, but
sort of followed the tax digest example.
>Is the Canadian Intellectual Property Office the government department that
>issues patents or the place where patent papers are kept?
Their website,
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_mrksv/cipo/welcome/welcom-e.html, says: "The
Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), a Special Operating Agency
(SOA) associated with Industry Canada, is responsible for the administration
and processing of the greater part of intellectual property in Canada.
CIPO's areas of activity include:
Patents cover new inventions (process, machine, manufacture, composition of
matter), or any new and useful improvement of an existing invention;
Trade-marks are words, symbols or designs (or a combination of these), used
to distinguish the wares or services of one person or organization from
those of others in the marketplace;" Etc
I take this to mean they handle the whole patent process. I do know that
CIPO is where you get copies of the patents. Their on-line database is
pretty neat and covers back 75 years, but for oldies but goodies like the
one in 1883, a real person needs to find it.
Now, on the photocopy of the patent from CIPO, at the time, patents were
issued by the Canadian Department of Agriculture, Patent Branch. I couldn't
decide to list that and/or CIPO.
I appreciate your questions though. Without experience looking at someone
else's genealogy and a source template, it is hard to anticipate what would
make it easier for someone else to find and understand a source. There were
a number of times this year, when I thought what was needed to find
something wasn't quite enough and had to go back to the microfilm to get
more data. I've actually registered for the FGS Conference in Boston, so
that will help with my learning process.
