"connected at 100 Mbps" sounds like the status of the NIC
which is then connected to the DSL "modem"; Similar to using a
dial-up modem at a serial port rate of 115Kbps, even though the phone
line is running at <45Kbps... The data is received by the "modem" at
the slow WAN rate, validated, then sent on to the computer at the
higher speed LAN rate.
