Matt,
I use the reference field for unique numbering of only people with the
surname of "Ball" either by birth, marriage or adoption (in my one-name
study, this is getting to be in the thousands). My only way so far to check
for duplication, or for where I left off numbering, is to sort the picklist
by the reference field and to scan down for obvious problems.
I have never tried to do a list of people with the reference number as the
primary sort that I could output to Excel and test for duplication (I use a
strictly numeric reference code, so this would be easy, but some
alphanumeric codes could be parsed in Excel and then sorted and tested), but
will need to figure one out when my database gets a lot bigger.
